Generative AI Policy
JIDS allows authors to use generative AI tools for limited support tasks, provided the use is disclosed and the authors remain fully responsible for the work. This policy follows the COPE position statement on authorship and AI tools.
Authors
- AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors, because they cannot take responsibility for the work, approve the final version, or declare conflicts of interest.
- Permitted with disclosure: improving language and readability, checking grammar, formatting references, and assisting with code used in data analysis.
- Not permitted: generating research data, interview transcripts, survey responses or images presented as findings; fabricating or paraphrasing sources to disguise their origin; and producing substantial parts of the analysis, discussion or conclusions without critical authorial input.
- Authors must state any use in a short "Declaration of Generative AI Use" placed before the References, naming the tool, its version, and the purpose. Example: "During the preparation of this work the authors used [tool, version] to improve the language of the manuscript. After using this tool, the authors reviewed and edited the content and take full responsibility for it."
- Every reference must be checked against the original source. Citations that cannot be located are treated as fabricated.
Reviewers
- Manuscripts under review are confidential. Reviewers must not upload any part of a manuscript or their report to a generative AI tool.
- Reviewers may use language tools only to polish the wording of their own report, without sharing manuscript content.
Editors
- Editors must not upload manuscripts, reviewer reports or decision letters to generative AI tools that retain or train on submitted content.
- Editorial decisions are made by the editors. AI tools may assist with administrative checks such as reference formatting or similarity screening, under the editor's supervision.
Breaches
Undisclosed or prohibited use discovered before publication may lead to rejection. After publication, it is handled under the Corrections & Retractions Policy.
